Wolverine Creek – Hawley Gulch _ Caribou-Targhee NF

The Wolverine Creek-Hawley Gulch Loop is about 10.5 miles long as it circumnavigates 6,711-foot Lookout Mountain east of Idaho Falls in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. You can base camp by the Hawley Gulch-Poison Flat area and ride from there. Take U.S. 26 east of Idaho Falls, heading for Swan Valley, cross the Snake River on the road to Heise Hot Springs, and then take Forest Road 218 up Kelly Canyon to the Hawley Gulch trailhead. The ride starts here. Take Hawley Gulch trail #276 up the draw. Turn right on Trail #131 to Lookout Mountain, then left on Trail #885 to Trail #292. Go right on Trail #292 and descend Wolverine Creek to Forest Road #206. Go right on #206 and then right again on Table Rock Canyon road #217 to return to the trailhead. Be sure to pack plenty of food and water. No services.
